Gold pocket watch by D. Bachelard et Fils
–
A fine 18K gold Swiss pocket watch, engraved in taille douce, circa 1840-50. This watch has a mechanical key winding manual wind movement featuring a frosted gilt finish. The white enamel dial shows elegant radial black Roman numerals for the hours, an outer minute track, and classic breguet style hands. The timepiece is housed in an 18 carat solid yellow gold case with a distinct coin edge case band, featuring a florally chased bezel, pendant, and bow, and a beautiful case back engraved in detailed taille douce with a view of the Roman Colosseum, complete with a hinged gold cuvette.

The cover of this watchcase is engraved with a view of the Roman Colosseum. At the time, travellers often visited Italy, especially Rome, as part of an extended trip called the Grand Tour. While wealthy aristocrats might return with classical antiquities, more modest travellers might buy this watch as a smaller souvenir of their travels.
