Silver repoussé pocket watch by Johann Nikolaus Delle

A fine German repoussé triple cased verge pocket watch, circa 1740. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, two hammers, three arm brass balance, pierced and engraved silver balance cock. Silver champlevé dial with Roman hours and Arabic five minute numerals, signed Augspurg. A silver, leather covered transport case with applied stud decoration, the outer case is also silver with a repoussé scene from the New Testament, showing how Saul became the Apostle Paul on the road to Damascus (the Conversion of Paul) and a silver inner case with a pierced and hand-engraved band decorated with foliage, fantasy birds and mascarons, rear bell, movement protection cap.

Johann Nicolaus Delle, an Augsburg watchmaker, became a master in 1732. On May 10th, 1733, he married the widow of watchmaker Joseph Anton Schoener (who had died a year earlier) in Augsburg, which enabled him to be self-employed. Delle was originally from Gdansk, Poland.
