Varicoloured gold chatelaine watch by Pierre Varin

A very fine French 18 carat multicoloured gold open faced quarter repeating verge pocket watch with matching chatelaine, circa 1785. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, one hammer and a three arm steel balance. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track, Arabic five minute numerals and decorative hands. The engraved case is hallmarked, has a bottom bell and the option to switch to silent repetition, the harvest motif on the back symbolizes summer and shows a basket with fruits and flowers, a rake and shovel, a scythe and straw hat in four colours gold against a guilloché background. The richly decorated chatelaine made of gold plated brass is decorated to match. Movement signed.

Pierre Varin was born around 1715. He was active as a watchmaker and watch dealer in Châlons-sur-Marne, France. The Varin family was an artistic family based in Châlons, which included tin potters, engravers, medalists and, in the 19th century, photographers. Pierre died on March 14th, 1786.
