The Mermod family is one of the oldest of Sainte-Croix, a small village in the Jura mountains, Switzerland. Sainte-Croix was a center of fine watchmaking. Family archives attest that members of the Mermod family already went on commercial trips to Geneva as early as the end of the 17th century to sell their minute repeating and complicated watches. Mermod timepieces were deeply appreciated for the quality of their movement and finishes.
–
In 1816, the four sons of watchmaker Louis Mermod started a workshop under the name Mermod Frères in Sainte-Croix. As former apprentices of Geneva master watchmakers, the brothers brought their expertise back to the village where they originated.
–
During the 19th century, Mermod Frères became one of the most prominent businesses in the exclusive field of Swiss watchmaking. They often made watches with musical movements and in addition they were renowned for automata and music boxes. It was one of the most awarded brands in the Swiss mechanical watch industry. The company took part in many Universal Exhibitions like Paris 1855, Anvers 1885 and Chicago 1893, and won 27 gold medals.
–
Mermod Frères’s watchmaking know-how was at its highest level when business was extended to mechanical music. It became a distinguished manufacturer of music boxes, producing outstanding prestigious pieces.
–
However, the Crisis of 1929 ended their activities. In 2006, under the impetus of Reuge, the brand has been revived and presented at Baselworld 2007 as a concept. In 2008, the first finished watches came onto the market and were instantly sold.
