Gilt oignon watch by Gaudron

A fine French gilt open faced Louis XIV oignon watch, circa 1710. Verge movement with silvered decoration, Egyptian pillars, large and steep fusee, verge cage restored. Probably original white enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic five minutes, minimal hairlines, presumably later hands. Magnificent engraved case, an armour with medal monogram cartouche on the back. Movement signed. Comes with a rare and decorative chatelaine with a seal pendant and key.

Pierre Gaudron was considered an outstanding watchmaker. He was the son of Antoine Gaudron (1) and brother of Antoine Gaudron (2). Gaudron worked in Paris between 1690 and 1730 and produced watches on behalf of the government. He was the Court watchmaker of the Duc d’Orleans and the King of France. He became watch a master in 1695.
