A very fine and rare French/English 20 carat varicoloured gold, enamel and diamond-set open faced verge pocket watch, circa 1775. Matte gilt movement, Ø 35 mm, pentagonal baluster pillars, fuse and chain, verge escapement with micrometric potence adjustment, three-arm balance, flat balance spring, pierced and engraved continental-type cock with endstone, silvered regulation dial. Convex white enamel dial with Roman hours, outer minute divisions, large Arabic five-minute numerals and rose-cut diamond-set hands. A Louis XVI case, the bezel is chased and engraved with flowers and scroll and set with rose-cut diamonds mounted in silver, the pendant is set with a large rose-cut diamond, the back with a polychrome enamel scene depicting country lovers in a romantic landscape, a chased and engraved varicoloured gold border decorated with putti, flowers, doves and scrolls. Dial signed, movement signed and numbered.
