Gold watch with musical trophies decorated chatelaine by Henri Voisin
–
A French multicoloured gold and diamond set verge watch with gold chatelaine decorated with musical trophies, circa 1775. The watch features a gilded full plate movement, signed Henri Voisin, à Paris, with a verge escapement, a plain flat three arm balance, a decoratively pierced and engraved balance bridge, a silver regulation plate, fusee and chain, and square baluster pillars. The restored white enamel dial, also signed by Henri Voisin, displays Roman numerals, an Arabic outer minute ring, an aperture for winding at 2 o’clock, and paste set hands. The gold case has the back chased and engraved with multicoloured gold musical trophies at the central panel, adorned with a bow and surrounded by floral garlands. The bezels have geometric decorated borders interspersed with stylised flower heads, and the front features a diamond set thumbpiece. Inside the case back is the Paris control mark, while the pendant bears an additional control mark.
–
The chatelaine, with panels decorated en suite with the case back, boasts multicoloured gold with musical trophies and baskets of flowers. The panel of the pendant hook depicts a burning altar of love surrounded by musical trophies and a basket of fruit, stamped at the back with a Paris control mark and further indistinct maker’s marks. The gilt metal pendant hook has two pendant chains, each terminating in a key.

The movement is somewhat reluctant to run, but with a little impetus, it will operate for a few seconds. One key to the chatelaine winds the watch, while the other does not seem to fit its square. The dial has been restored in soft enamel and shows light surface scratches. One paste is missing from the minute hand. The case and chatelaine have light scuffs and scratches throughout. Several pastes are missing from the bezel, and one key has a split shank.

Signed: Henri Voisin, à Paris
