Gold repoussé pocket watch by Robert Markham

A very fine English 20 carat gold pair cased repoussé verge pocket watch, circa 1760. Frosted gilt full plate movement with square baluster pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, three armed steel balance with flat balance spring, pierced and engraved continental cock, silver regulation dial. White enamel enamel dial with Roman numerals, outer minute track, five minute Arabic numerals, the border decorated with a polychrome stag hunting scene and original gold fleur-de-lys hands. Repoussé outer case, decorated with a scene of Apollo and the Cumaean Sybil, within an asymmetric rococo cartouche, bezel decorated to match, the inner case polished. Movement signed.

Robert Markham (circa 1725-1780), the son-in-law and partner of James Markwick, he succeeded him in 1730. He used the tradename Markwick-Markham but also traded under his own name as well as with that of F. Perigal.
