A very fine French 18 carat gold open faced ankerchronometer pocket watch, circa 1880. Exquisite ankerchronometer movement with golden wheels, wolf’s toothing. White enamel dial with Roman numerals and gold hands, signed under the dial Calibre Rötig Havre. Plain case. Dome signed F. Rötig Constructeur de Chronometres Havre No 5429 and numbered. Comes with signed original box.

Frédéric Rötig (1829-1905) was based in Le Havre as a watch and chronometer maker, in 1869 he patented an improvement in the design of pocket watches. He promoted with the title ‘Constructeur de Chronomètres’ and ‘Inventeur’ for his watches. He was also ‘Horloger de la Marine’ at Le Havre. The name Rötig is not typical in French speaking countries. Frédéric Rötig was born as Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Roetig on January 22, 1829 in Hachenburg/Westerwald. His father was the Hachenburg watchmaker Friedrich Wilhelm Roetig (1782-1861).
