Gold open faced verge watch by John Wilter
–
A fine English double-cased verge pocket watch, Allegory of Summer, with date and repoussé outer case, circa 1730. There are two cases: the outer case is made of 18K gold and is decorated with a symbolic picture of summer featuring three women holding a cornucopia, cut grain, and a fruit basket. It also has a large outer hinge. The inner case is also made of 18K gold and has a polished finish with the case maker’s punch mark LB. The gold champlevé dial has inlaid radial Roman numerals, Arabic minutes, a date window at 6 o’clock, and blued Fleur-de-Lys hands. The fine full plate movement is keywind and fire gilt with applied engraved ornaments, chain/fusee, and baluster movement pillars. It is signed and has a three-arm brass balance that is finely engraved and a pierced balance bridge with hunting scenes.

John Wilter worked as a watchmaker in London between 1730 and 1740. Other sources mention it between 1760 and 1784. There are watches signed with John Wilter or Wilter called pseudo-London watches. These are probably made in Geneva. E.g. a pocket watch from John Wilter London N °. 5719 The British Museum.
