An English pair cased verge pocket watch with repoussé” decoration, matching repoussé chatelaine, pendant, and key, circa 1730.
Two cases: an outer case – 22-Carat gold, “repoussé” decoration, pastoral scene in the style of Antoine Watteau, engraved and chased volutes and scrollwork, large lateral hinge: and an inner case – 22-Carat gold, polished. Corresponding fire-gilt Repoussé chatelaine. Signed gold, champlevé dial with inlaid radial Roman hours and Louis XV hands. Full plate movement, keywind, applied, florally engraved and pierced silver ornaments, fire-gilt, signed, chain/fusee, square baluster pillars, three-arm steel balance, fine florally engraved, pierced silver balance cock with mascaron.

Clockmaker Matthew Skinner apprenticed with Francis Hill (1670-1700); he qualified in 1713 and became a master of the Clockmakers’ Company in 1746. One of Skinner’s movements is held by the Guildhall Museum in London.

Jean Antoine Watteau, better known as Antoine Watteau, was born in Valencijn on October 10, 1684, and died in Nogent-sur-Marne on July 18, 1721. He was a French painter of the rococo period. Watteau’s place of birth was conquered by the French in 1678.
