A fine French onyx, enamel, gold, and platinum mounted keyless lever open faced Art Deco dress watch, circa 1925. This watch has a slim, damascened nickel movement with a lever escapement, bimetallic compensation balance, 19 jewels, and a top plate numbered under the dial 21611, signed European Watch & Clock Co., Inc. It features a silvered, engine turned dial, a high sheen satin finished chapter ring with Arabic numeral 5 minute markers, an outer minute ring, and blued steel moon hands, signed Cartier France. The onyx case has chamfered bezels, a black enamel bezel with gold Roman numerals interspersed with flowerheads, gold milled borders, and a platinum pendant and bow with hand stamped numbers 037 54 and 3861. The inner ring for securing the movement to the case is numbered 15789.

The movement is running smoothly. The dial is in good overall condition, showing minor tarnishing and light scuffs at the centre. The case remains in good condition, with the hallmark slightly worn on the bow.

The 1920s were an exciting time for Cartier, with many experiments with both the form of watches and the very fabric that was used to make them. Platinum, onyx, and jade were strikingly used by Cartier throughout this period, clearly demonstrating the fascination with China and Japan at the time.
