Gold and silver open faced pocket watch by Breguet
–
A fine, small, and slim French gold and silver ruby cylinder watch, featuring subsidiary hour and minute dials, a short gold chain, and a ratchet key, circa 1825. This watch features a gilded movement with a ruby cylinder escapement, a flat three arm gold balance, and parachute suspension. The regulator has a long arm that leads to a dial indicator. The dial is silver engine turned with two subsidiary dials for hours and minutes. It has satin finished chapter rings and contrasting engine turned centres, along with gold moon hands. The minute hand includes a small offset setting square at its base and an aperture for regulation. The satin finished banner is signed Breguet.

The gold and silver Tavernier case features a gold engine turned bayonet fitted back that slides open to reveal a female winding square. It has a silver band, an engine turned bezel, and a gold pendant and bow. The inside back is stamped with B 4287 and T 4011, and there is an additional stamp of MAB beneath a triangle within a lozenge shaped cartouche, along with Paris control marks for the years 1819-1838. The watch comes with a short gold chain and a gold double ended male and female ratchet key. It is accompanied by a Breguet certificate dated January 27, 2020.

Movement winds but does not run; the balance staff might be broken. The dial has been previously refreshed, showing a few small spots. The case features an engine turning on the bezel, which is significantly rubbed. The case back exhibits edge wear on the engine turning, along with some scratches. The silver band is tarnished, and there are scratches on the winding hole cover.

Count Karoly was a guest at Chatsworth, the residence of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, on the evening of October 20, 1832. Among the attendees was the young Princess Victoria, who would later become Queen Victoria. After dinner, a charade was performed where Count Karoly took on the role of Bluebeard. Following the visit, as Princess Victoria continued her Royal Progress in her carriage, she sketched a portrait of Count Karoly from memory in his Bluebeard costume. This sketch is now part of the Royal Collection Trust. One might wonder if Count Karoly was proudly wearing his Breguet watch during his stay at Chatsworth.

Signed: Breguet
