Gold watch with ruby cylinder escapement

A fine Swiss 18K gold quarter repeating pocket watch with ruby cylinder escapement, circa 1840. Presented by the German Army to the Austrian Lieutenant Anton Mollinary in 1842. A cast and chased flower bezel, pendant and bow, coin-edge band, slide at 2 for locking the repeating, the back cover engraved with a scene of a hunter sounding the hunting horn in a landscape with a stag and hounds, foliate border and edge to match the bezel, the interior engraved Die Regierungen des 8 deutschen Armee Korps dem österreichischen pioneer Lieutenant A. Mollinary 1842. Hinged gold cuvette engraved with the technical details highlighted in enamel. White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions and gold Breguet hands. A matte gilt movement, 14 jewels, ruby cylinder escapement, three-arm gilt balance, blued steel flat balance spring, index regulator, repeating on gongs activated by depressing the pendant. Cuvette signed.

Anton Mollinary was a famous soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army. The present watch was given early in his career when he was still a Lieutenant. Eventually, Mollinary was to become the Lieutenant General of the Habsburg forces.
