–
An English gold, enamel, and pearl set pocket watch with chatelaine, circa 1790. This watch features a gilt, full plate movement with verge escapement and a pierced and engraved balance bridge. It has a white enamel dial with an Arabic minute ring and decorative gold hands, signed by Robin A Paris. The gold case has pearl set bezels and a polychrome enamel scene on the back depicting a classical female figure seated by a stream with a male figure behind. It also comes with an associated gold and enamel chatelaine.

The dial is in good condition, though there is some dirt on the glass. The case shows scratches and chips in the enamel throughout. There is a chip on the band and areas that have undergone restoration. Some pearls have lost their luminescence but remain intact. The movement is fully wound but not running; the balance rotates freely when power is applied to the train. The chatelaine has indistinct stamps on the hook, which is bent and misshaped. There is extensive damage to the enamel areas, with large sections of enamel missing from the engine turned panels and key.

This open faced watch was made by the well known French clock and watchmaker, Robert Robin (1741-1799), who counted Marie-Antoinette among his clientele. Richly decorated pocket watches and chatelaines were typical for that time.
Another notable achievement of Robin was creating a watch escapement that bears his name.
