Gold open faced automaton pocket watch

Very fine, rare French 18 carat rose gold Hiding Jacks automaton quarter repeating watch, circa 1820. Gilt full plate, fusee and chain, verge escapement, silver regulating plate, pierced and engraved bridge cock, striking on gongs by depressing the pendant.
The silver engine-turned dial is designed as a theatre with gold Father Time sitting in the centre of the theatre scene, holding two scythes. While pressing the pendant two cherubs suddenly appear striking hours and quarters in the scythes. Eccentric silver chapter ring Roman numerals. Case and band engine-turned.
