Gold and enamel open faced verge watch

A fine French 20 Carat gold and enamel quarter repeating à toc verge pocket watch, circa 1765. Cupid’s Arrow by Berthoud. A Louis XV case, the back centred by a painted on enamel medallion depicting Cupid shooting his love arrow, a sailing ship in the background against a sunset, framed by white enamel dots simulating pearls, translucent plum coloured enamel border over engine-turning, bezels in champlevé foliate enamel finished with a row of white enamel dots simulating pearls.

White enamel dial, radial Roman hours, outer minute divisions with five-minute Arabic markers, winding aperture at 2 o’clock and gold Louis XV hands. A frosted gilt full plate movement with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, micrometric potence adjustment, brass balance with flat balance spring, continental cock, repeating train with the two-arm fly governor, repeating on gold blocks fixed to the case activated by depressing the pendant. Signed on dial and movement, case punched with maker’s mark.
