Repeating watch with four automaton actions by Breguet et Fils
–
A rare and unusual French key-winding 18K gold pocket watch with multicoloured gold striking jacks and an automaton scene of Punchinello appearing to strike the hour bell, with a total of four automaton actions, circa 1810.
Gilded brass movement with fusee and chain, verge escapement, monometallic balance (gilded brass), blued steel flat hairspring, and a pierced and engraved gilded continental cock. White enamel dial in an outer chapter ring with Breguet numerals and original blued steel Scottie’s hands. Round-shaped 18K yellow gold case. Cuvette and dial signed.

Punchinello.
In this uncommon automaton scene, the figure of Punchinello enters the aperture at the top from the left when the pendant is depressed; after he has struck the hours, he disappears, and the cherubs below then strike the quarters.
This watch is so rare that Alfred Chapuis and Edmond Droz found only a movement to illustrate it in their book Les Automates.
