A rare and exquisite French gold quarter repeating calendar cylinder watch with date, month, and equation of time indicators, circa 1820. The watch features a gilded movement with cylinder escapement, a plain steel three-arm balance, a ruby endstone, a free-standing barrel, two polished steel hammers repeating on gongs mounted to the movement edge, and visible repeating work on the backplate. It also includes a gilt metal hinged cuvette signed and numbered by Charles Oudin Eve de Breguet, Palais Royal N.52, with the serial number 6980. The silver engine-turned dial has satin-finished chapter rings for Roman numerals, outer minutes, and an inner sector for the equation of time. It also has apertures for date and month, with blued steel hands, signed by Chs. Oudin.
–
The watch is housed in a pink gold case with an engine-turned case back, milled band and bezels, a plunge pendant for repetition with a locking slide above 11 o’clock, and a concealed slide beneath the bezel between 10 and 11 o’clock for date adjustment. Charles Oudin
, a talented and innovative watchmaker and clockmaker, was a student of Abraham-Louis Breguet. Oudin excelled in creating watches with the Equation of Time indication and devised a form of complication that could be integrated into Breguet’s Souscription watches. By 1805, he had established his presence at the Palais Royal, Galerie de Pierre. In 1819, an Equation of Time watch created by Oudin was featured at the Paris Exhibition.
