Gold and enamel verge pocket watch by Ferdinand Berthoud

A fine French gold, enamel pocket watch with rose diamonds, circa 1790. This watch has a gilt full plate movement, an enamel dial with Roman numerals and original hands. On the case back, there is a finely painted polychrome enamel scene of Cupid with a woman in a woodland setting. The bezel is engraved and has applied decoration. The watchmaker is Ferdinand Berthoud, a French artisan from 1727 to 1807, and the watch is signed on the works. The marking on the top of the stem is incised as 135, E G.
