Gilt brass Oignon watch by Vivier
–
A French Oignon watch with a rare factory-decorated case, circa 1710. The watch has a gilt brass case with a relief scene on the back featuring a putto and a dog. It has an Oignon movement with a unique design and a magnificent regulating scale made of silver. The regulation has an unusually long lever, and the spindle bridge is decorated with rocaille and birds. The watch is signed on the plate and has beautiful brass and silver hands. The enamel dial has raised cartouches, Roman radial hours, an outer minutes track with Arabic five-minute numerals and iron hands. The glass has probably been replaced, but the watch is still in working condition.

This IB Vivier verge pocket watch is believed to have been created by Jean Baptiste du Vivier, a French watchmaker who operated in Hesdin, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Hesdin is a small town with a population of around 2000 today, which was also well-known in the past. Emperor Charles V established Hesdin in 1554 on the banks of the Kwinte (Canche) after the original town of Hesdin was destroyed. The original Hesdin was one of the most important cities in Artesia, and its castle and town hall, which dates back to the 16th century, was originally the palace of Mary of Hungary, the sister of Emperor Charles V.

On January 11, 1695, Jean Baptiste du Vivier married Marie Françoise Vasseur in the neighbouring town of Marcone, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. He passed away in Hesdin after 1705.
