Gold open faced pocket watch by Jean “Charles” Oudin

A rare quarter repeating French gentleman’s pocket watch, circa 1815. Made by one of the master pupils of Breguet in a case made by Tavernier.
18 carat gold à goutte case with numbered and signed gold dome and pusher for repetition via pendant. Signed two-tone silver engine turned dial with radial Roman hours and blued Breguet hands. Bridge movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, large barrel, English lever escapement, gold screw compensation balance, flat blued steel balance spring with temperature compensation and shock protection.

Charles Oudin (1772-1825) Oudin was a pupil of Abraham-Louis Breguet and one of his best masters. Oudin started his own business in Paris and was appointed watchmaker to the Russian tsar; he became famous for designing a keyless wind. His son Charles continued the business after his father’s death.
