Pair cased silver enamel and gilt clock watch by Auguste Bretonneau

A high-quality French silver hour striking one-handed coach clock with alarm, circa 1650. This watch features a plain case back and a band that is richly engraved with floral designs. The dial is white enamel and displays Roman numerals, with a central turnable gilt alarm disc that is also engraved. The watch has a single-blued steel hand. The movement is fire gilt full plate with chain and fusee, rear bell, verge escapement, iron balance, and an engraved and pierced balance bridge. The watchmaker Auguste Bretonneau, a master from 1638-43, signed the movement.

Auguste Bretonneau
was a master watchmaker and watch dealer in Paris. He resided on rue Mascon in the parish of Saint-Séverin. Auguste was married to Suzanne Delaunay. His name appeared in various records on April 13, 1638, June 25, 1647, October 23, 1654, January 12, 1657, and March 16, 1683. He served as an apprentice to Jozias Jolly for six years, starting from May 21, 1622, when he was just 14 years old.
