Silver Oignon pocket watch by Jacques Thuret

A French silver Oignon pocket watch with quarter repeating on a bell, circa 1720. Splendid fire gilt full plate verge movement, silver pierced and engraved balance bridge, silver Egyptian pillars, silver regulator disc, signed movement.
White enamel with black Roman numerals, decorative gilt hands, Roman hours, Arabic minutes, repeating hours and quarters with very good sound. Push pendant for quarter repeating.
Silver plain case with sound openings.

Thuret, Jacques. Paris 1694-1712. In 1694 was granted his father’s (Isaac Thuret’s) appointments.

Thuret, Isaac. Paris 1669-d.1700 was considered to be the greatest clockmaker of his time. Clockmaker to Louis XIV and the Observatory. Claimed the invention of a spiral balance spring, but denied it in a letter to Huygens in 1675, saying that the invention claimed was the use of a flat spring for pendulum support. Made watches with a balance spring for Huygens and a clock for Leiden Observatory to Huygens’ order.
