Silver coach watch by Jacques Cogniet

A small French silver open faced half hour and hour self striking verge coach watch with false pendulum, circa 1720. Full plate movement, chain and fusee, one hammer, an additional florally engraved barrel for self striking, elaborately florally engraved balance bridge with doves and opening for the false pendulum, the hour and half hour strike mechanism is triggered by two pins on a pinion in the central axis, these pins move a lever and thus release the striking mechanism. A plain case with pierced sound holes in the shape of flowers and engraved concentric circles on the back, a bottom bell for the self strike. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track and Arabic five minute numerals. Movement signed.

The Parisian watchmaker Jacques Cogniet (also Cognet) was born around 1661 to the watchmaker Antoine Cogniet and his wife Marie Auger. Like his father, Jacques became a master watchmaker in Paris and was based in the parish of St. Germain l’Auxerrois. He died on March 4, 1730.
