Gold duplex calendar watch by Brunschwik

A French gold open faced two-time zone calendar duplex watch with centre seconds, made for the Chinese market, circa 1870. The watch features a gilded, partially skeletonized Tixier calibre movement with highly decorative engraved bridges, a duplex escapement, and an unusual balance with a balustraded rim. The dial is white enamel with separate subsidiary dials for each time zone, one with Arabic numerals and the other with Roman numerals, outer minute rings, a central blued steel jumping seconds hand, and two further subsidiary dials for date and day of the week. The dial edge is calibrated for months with the corresponding number of days.

The case is gold with an engine-turned back, milled band, and inside back with decorative moiré-style engine-turned decoration. The gold cuvette features apertures for winding and hand-setting the separate time zones and is engraved with Echappement Duplex, Seconde Fixe, Deux Meridiens et Calendrier Perpétuel fait par Brunschwik à Lyon, and numbered 130 on the cuvette interior.

The movement is running, but it is a little dirty and may benefit from a service and overhaul. The cuvette is marked ‘calendrier perpetual,’ but it is not a true perpetual calendar and does not adjust for the differing lengths of the month. The dial has a deep scratch on the left time dial, a small double hairline crack at the edge of the dial by the indication for November, and possibly a very faint hairline at the edge by March. There are also a few further scratches. The case has two or three minor indentations to the case back, some rubbing, and loss of definition to the edge of the case back, as well as some denting to the bezel beneath the pendant and below 6 o’clock.
