Gold open faced pocket watch

A rare French 18 carat gold and enamel open faced pocket watch made by Jean-Antoine Lépine in Paris, circa 1790. The prime quality frosted fire gilt full plate movement has a verge escapement, pierced and engraved balance cock with a polished steel coqueret and three arm flat balance, and a silver regulation disc with copper indicator. The case back features a finely painted polychrome enamel classical scene on a translucent dark blue enamelled guilloché ground of a man and a woman in the garden, further pearl set bezels and an engraved band, the front cover opens by depressing the button on the pendant. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, an outer minute track, Arabic quarter hour numerals, and gold poker & beetle hands. The dial and movement are signed L’Épine Hger du Roy à Paris.
