A very fine 14 carat rose gold and niëllo hunting cased Glashütte pocket watch, circa 1900. ¾ Plate movement, a lever escapement and gold screw compensation balance. White enamel dial with Arabic hours, outer minute divisions, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and Louis XIV hands. A niëllo inlay on both sides of the case, the front depicting Flora, goddess of flowers and the season of spring, standing on a pedestal with a flower sceptre in her hand surrounded by flower scrolls and garlands, the back is decorated with matching ornaments and has a vase with beautiful flowers in the centre, the band with an engraved laurel wreath pattern. Dial signed, case and movement signed and numbered, case and movement with matching numbers. Comes with the original presentation box and certificate.

Julius Assmann was born in 1827 and died in 1886 at the age of 58. He was a passionate watchmaker in Glashütte, Germany. Assmann at one time was employed by his father-in-law, Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the man who laid the cornerstone of the German watchmaking industry in the 1840s. He founded his own company in 1852, the Julius Assmann Deutsche Präzisions-Taschenuhren-Fabrik (German Precision Pocket Watch Factory) producing key wound pocket watches. Assmann was soon awarded the gold medal by the German Trade Industry. Within two years, his watches progressed to crown winding and the three-quarter plates so characteristic of Glashütte. When he died his company was divided among the Assmann family.
