A very fine and rare German 18K gold and enamel open faced verge pocket watch, circa 1780. The Altar of Love by John Georg Schlicker. Chased bezels, concealed hinge, the back panel enamelled with a finely painted scene of a maiden in classical dress paying tribute to the altar of Love, over an opalescent ground, outer paillonné decorated border.

White enamel dial with black Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with Arabic quarter hours, inner red Arabic date numerals, gold hour and minute hands. A hinged gilt-brass full plate movement, cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, micrometric potence adjustment, plain gilt-brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt-brass continental cock with polished steel end-piece, silver regulation disc. Dial and movement signed.
