Absolute rarity with jumping centre seconds and calendar
–
An absolute rarity this gold pocket chronometer with jumping centre seconds and calendar, probably made in Neuchatel, Switzerland, for the Chinese market Circa 1790. The watch’s 18 Carat rose gold case is open faced, plain, glazed and has a hallmark.
The white enamel dial features a decentralized time display at 6 o’clock with real jumping centre seconds using a black metal Breguet hand, as well as fine rose gold arrow Breguet hands for the hours. The watch also displays the day of the week in French at 11 o’clock and the date at 1 o’clock, both with a fine rose gold arrow Breguet hand. The full plate movement is equipped with a chain/fusee and chronometer escapement, as well as a gear wheel with ten teeth, jumping centre seconds and a large, very slowly oscillating balance.

The case hallmark DMI indicates Neuchatel. Pocket chronometers from this period with jumping seconds are extremely rare. Dedicated to watchmaking and a global ambassador of this fascinating expertise, the region of Neuchâtel is a remarkable distillation of Swiss ingenuity. While other regions lay claim to a watchmaking tradition, none has the legitimacy of the region of Neuchâtel.
