Complicated repeating chronograph by Le Coultre & Co. / J. E. Dufour

A Swiss heavy hunting cased pocket watch with chronograph, minute repeater, perpetual calendar and moon phase, circa 1895.
The case is 18 Carat rose gold, polished, monogrammed and à goutte with signed and numbered gold dome, case maker’s punch mark DB, pusher for chronograph at 12, and slide for repeating mechanism. The dial is enamel with radial Roman hours, auxiliary seconds, moon phase, day, date and month indicator considering the leap year, gold spade hands, and centre chronograph hand. And the movement is a rhodium-plated bridge movement with Geneva Striping, finely ground and bevelled chronograph steel parts, ratchet wheel, two hammers, two gongs, wolf teeth winding wheels, screw compensation balance, and counterpoised lever.

The company JE Dufour & Cie. was based in Geneva and was founded by Jean Etienne Dufour around 1860. JE Dufour & Cie. was a well-respected company. The company was taken over by E. Wirth (Edouard?) And then renamed JE Dufour & Cie. E. Wirth Successeur. The company was later renamed E. Wirth fabrique d’Horlogerie, place du Molard 15 Bijouterie – Horlogerie. In 1913 the company E. Wirth was renamed E. Wirth & Cie. Owners Edouard Wirth and Charles Wirth. E. Wirth & Cie. was the official representative of Longines in Switzerland for many years.

The company won medals, awards and prizes: In Geneva in 1855 and 1857 (presumably as a student), at the World Exhibition in Paris 1878 (silver), Chicago 1893, Geneva Chronometer Competition in 1880 (Honorable), Melbourne World Exhibition 1880 first prize, and at the National Exhibition Geneva in 1896 a gold medal. The company’s directors included F. Vidonne and Henri Pithan.
