–
A fine and probably unique Swiss 18 carat gold hunting cased chronograph with vertical register and pulsometer scale made by Patek Philippe, circa 1914. The gilt, jewelled manual winding movement with a nickel moustache lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance and an index regulator. A hinged gold cuvette. White enamel dial with Breguet hours, an outer minute and fifth of a second track with five minute numerals, an outermost red pulsometer scale graduated to 30 pulsations, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock, a 30 minute counter at 12 and blued hands. The polished case with a pusher for the start and stop function of the chronograph at 12 o’clock. Case, dial and movement signed. Comes with an Extract from the Archives confirming production of the watch with an enamel dial and pulsometer scale in 1914 and its sale in October 1923.

A chronograph watch with a pulsations scale on the dial is called a ‘doctor’s watch’. It helps doctors cut down on the time necessary to gauge a person’s pulse and, more importantly, reduce errors. The doctor would simply start the chronograph, count 30 heartbeats and then stop the chronograph to see the patient’s pulse per minute on the red scale without further calculations.

This watch is the only known hunting cased Patek Philippe chronograph pocket watch with a vertical register and pulsations scale.
