Silver astronomical watch by Bareiht Menadier
–
A Swiss silver, single cased verge watch featuring indications for the date, month, phase and age of the moon, ruling planet, and periods of the day, circa 1700. The gilded full plate movement, signed by Bareiht Menadier, has a verge escapement, a flat three arm balance with a short spring, a blued steel wheel and click, a small silver regulation disc, a fusee and chain, and a broad cock that is decoratively pierced and engraved with floral motifs. Additionally, it features a similarly decorated screwed on foot. The gilded dial boasts a stippled ground, three silver chapter rings, and blued steel hands indicating the date, time, and moon phase. An aperture displays the moon phases, accompanied by three additional apertures for ruling planets and their corresponding signs. The month is adorned with engraved seasonal vignettes, alongside periods of the day represented by the changing sky.

The plain silver case has a case back that includes a shuttered winding aperture, a pendant embellished with a stirrup form bow, and the case maker’s mark is an incuse DC.

The movement is running, and the blued steelwork has been refreshed, with some slight scratches around the posts. The chapter ring shows tarnishing, indicating a repair between 5 and 6 o’clock. The silver case has light scuffs and scratches, along with tarnishing and a few minor depressions. The shuttered winding aperture operates correctly, and the cover closes securely.
