Gold open faced keyless lever watch

A rare and interesting Swiss 18 carat yellow gold minute repeating open faced keyless pocket watch made by Patek Philippe in Geneva, circa 1890. Retailed by A.H. Rodanet & Co. Manual wind jewelled nickel lever movement, repeating the minutes with two hammers on 2 gongs. White enamel dial with Roman hours, an outer minute track, outermost Arabic five minute numerals, sunk subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and blued spade hands. The case with an engraved lion on the back, the Latin motto Spectemur Agendo (let us be judged by ourselves in English) in a banner underneath and a gold cuvette. Cuvette signed by both the retailer and watchmaker.

Auguste-Hilaire Rodanet (1837-1907), the son of Julien Hilaire, was a watchmaker, merchant and Patek Philippe agent in France. He established his shop on Rue Vivienne in 1870.

The present watch is an example of a complicated Patek Philippe movement offered in a retailer case. The case is not only signed by Rodanet and Patek Philippe, but also inscribed with the watch number.
