Decorative gold ladies’ pocket watch

A fine French 18 carat gold open faced ladies’ pocket watch, made by Daniel Vaucher in Paris, circa 1790. The signed movement features a verge escapement. The white enamel dial shows Arabic numerals for the hours, an outer minute track, red Arabic numerals for every fifteen minutes, and decorative gold hands (one hand is loose). The 18 carat gold case has a back decorated with a dog and two birds touching beaks. The maker’s mark LF/C appears under an unidentified crown.

Daniel Vaucher (also known as Vauchez) was a master watchmaker in Paris, based on rue du Preaux-Boeufs. He was a favourite of the aristocracy and the Queen of France, and was involved in the affair of the Queen’s famous necklace. His pocket watches are now in the Louvre and other major museums worldwide.
