Gold hunting cased keyless lever watch
–
A fine 14 carat pink gold full hunter pocket watch made by International Watch Co. (IWC) in Schaffhausen, circa 1895. It features a high grade mechanical crown winding gold plated lever movement, calibre 53, with 15 jewels, three screwed chatons, a bimetallic compensation balance, a Breguet hairspring, and a precision regulator adjustment, signed International Watch Co. The white enamel dial has black Roman numerals for the hours, a fine outer minute track with Arabic five minute numerals, a constant subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, and gilded Louis XV style hands. The dial shows various faults and hairlines.

The timepiece is housed in a round two body, 14 carat pink gold full hunter case with a spring hinged front cover decorated with a massive, stylized and raised interlocking decorative monogram, a plain polished reverse back cover, a fluted winding crown, a sturdy suspension bow, and a solid 14 carat gold inner protective cuvette. The hunter cover hinge shows evidence of a prior professional repair.

The IWC Calibre 53 is one of the key mechanical movements and historic cornerstones of the Schaffhausen manufacture. Introduced in 1888 and produced for decades alongside its open faced sister calibre 52, it was engineered as a robust savonette movement to fit the protective spring covers of luxury hunter cases. Esteemed by collectors for its exceptional dependability, thick plate construction, and precision features like screwed chatons, the Calibre 53 solidifies IWC’s reputation for utilitarian durability combined with traditional Swiss luxury at the close of the nineteenth century.
