Important watch for the 5th Shah of Persia

An important gold and enamel full hunter cased watch, made for the 5th Shah of Persia, Mozaffar ad-Din in Switzerland, circa 1905. The numbered case of this watch is crafted from 18 carat gold and enamel and has a spring lid with an enamel painting representing of the 5th Shah of Persia, Mozaffar ad-Din as the commander of the Persian Guard, is set with original jewellery with diamonds and rubies, a back lid with the Persian coat of arms with lion, sabre, sun and laurel wreath and the case band is also fantastically enamelled. The extremely rare red engine turned enamel dial has gold Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock and gold hands. The numbered cuvette is inscribed Mouvement de la Vallee and a list of complications. The glazed movement has a highly complicated Swiss precision lever escapement, a minute repeater and a chronograph.

The signature “Mouvement de la Vallee” is an indication of the high quality of the movement, for which movements from the “Vallee” are known, e.g. Le Coultre or Louis-Elisée Piguet. It is either the personal watch of the 5th Shah of Persia or an extremely precious presentation watch. Another example exist with exactly the same case but a normal “white” dial and it is estimated at € 80.000.
