Highly interesting chronometer for the Cuban market
–
A highly interesting chronometer with gold and enamel case, made at the Guinand Frères workshop in les Brenets, Switzerland, circa 1865. This watch features an extremely heavy and 18 carat solid gold and enamel, full hunter, à goutte case with a floral relief band, monograms on both sides and a numbered cuvette marked: Chronometro, Montado en piedras Finas (Mounted on fine stones, referring to the high grade jewel bearings used to reduce friction), Privilegio (patented) and Habana. The extremely beautiful champlevé dial features an outer hour track with gold Roman hour numerals, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, a power reserve indicator at 12 o’clock and gold hands. The numbered movement is equipped with an exquisite pivoted detent chronometer escapement, screwed gold chatons, a helical hairspring, a diamond end stone, a solid gold escape wheel, chain fusee and is also inscribed ’Privilegio’ (patented).
The cuvette and movement bear matching numbers and the dial and cuvette are signed.

The Guinand watchmaking family is synonymous with Swiss chronometers and tourbillons of the highest quality. Many watches of this kind were intended for export to South America or, as is the case with the item presented here, to Cuba and were delivered with the typical champlevé dials, also used for this item.

Guinand
B. Guinand generally refers to the work of the Guinand family, a lineage of master watchmakers from the Swiss Jura region (specifically Les Brenets and Le Locle) who specialised in high precision pocket watches and chronographs during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
While the family name is most famously associated with the brand Guinand Frères, individual members like Benoit Guinand or his relatives often marked movements or cases with their initials.
