A very fine and rare Swiss 18-carat gold hunting cased pocket chronometer, detent escapement with chain, fusee and blue steel, helical balance spring, circa 1870. As almost as new presentation watch of Emperor Napoleon III to a duke.
Frosted gilt high-quality movement, jewelled, pivoted detent chronometer escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold timing screws, blued steel helical balance spring, index regulator. Gold hinged cuvette. White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track and Arabic five-minute numerals, subsidiary seconds dial at six o’clock, and original gold spade hands. Engine-turned case with polished borders, the spring-loaded front cover is decorated with a finely executed coat of arms with a Roman warrior and the inscription Audax sed Fidelis (bold but faithful); above it is a duke’s magnificent crown. Both are in excellent condition, as is the monogram of Napoleon III. on the back.
