Gunmetal eight day going lever watch
–
An interesting eight day going pocket watch with adjustable day counter made in Switzerland, circa 1900. This watch features a gunmetal case. The white enamel dial has bold Roman hour numerals, an outer minute track, a subsidiary seconds dial at 6 o’clock, an unusual seven day counter at 12 and steel spade hands. When the watch is completely wound, the day counter should be set manually to get the correct power reserve display. The eight day movement, according to the Hebdomas patent, features a lever escapement.

The Hebdomas patent
The Hebdomas patent established the design for a pocket watch movement with an eight day power reserve, featuring a massive mainspring barrel that spans the entire movement diameter and a distinctive dial side exposed balance wheel, often decorated with floral motifs. Invented by Iréné Aubry and patented in 1889, the design was first licensed to Graizely & Cie, which registered the “Hebdomas” trademark in the same year. The watch’s name comes from the Greek word for week, reflecting its capability to run for at least a full week on a single winding.
