IWC was founded in 1868 by Florentine Ariosto Jones, an American engineer and watchmaker. Jones combined modern engineering technology from the U.S. with Swiss craftsmanship to produce high-quality watches for the American market. Johann Heinrich Moser helped Jones establish IWC in Schaffhausen, the only watch manufacturer in north-eastern Switzerland. Moser built Schaffhausen’s first hydroelectric plant, laying the cornerstone for future industrialization.
