Unsigned gold open faced pocket watch
–
A Swiss/French gold quarter repeating musical cylinder watch, circa 1815. The watch features a gilded movement with a cylinder escapement, a plain three-arm balance, two standing barrels for music and going trains, two steel hammers repeating on coiled gongs, and music playing on a pinned disc by tuned tines. The gold engine-turned dial includes a white enamel chapter ring with Arabic numerals, a polished outer minute ring, and a vacant white enamel banner.
–
The gold case is equipped with an engine-turned case back centred with a vacant roundel, a milled band, a gilt metal cuvette with apertures and directionals for winding and hand-setting, a cuvette with maker’s mark C & J in oval cartouche and numbered 2318, and a case back with French control marks for 1809-1819 and an indistinct maker’s mark.

The mechanism is running and repeating, but the music is working intermittently. Sometimes it will play for a while and then stop. The start-stop lever for the music is currently not operating correctly and will require cleaning and adjustment. The dial is generally in good condition with a few scuffs, and the case back remains in crisp condition with engine turning.
