Gold and enamel pocket watch by Moulinié
–
A Swiss yellow gold and enamel open faced key wound quarter repeating cylinder watch, circa 1850. This watch features a gilt-finished jewelled cylinder movement with a quarter repeater mechanism activated by two hammers. The gold dial is adorned with engraved floral and scroll designs and includes Roman numerals on an engine turned chapter ring. The 18 carat yellow gold case includes a slide in the milled band to activate the quarter repeater. The hinged case back is exquisitely decorated with blue and white enamel motifs on a scroll engraved background. It also includes a gold cuvette. Both the dial and movement are signed, while the case and cuvette are numbered, and the case is stamped with P.E.

The movement is operational, though the quarter repeating function is slightly sticky and needs some attention. The dial is in good condition, with minor numeral losses and light tarnishing and wear throughout. The case is very crisp and well preserved, showing light surface wear consistent with its age. The enamel is generally good, with minor loss at 11 o’clock and some discolouration throughout.

Moulinié, based in Geneva, was established in 1795 by Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié and was also recognised as Moulinié Frères & Cie. In 1796, Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié partnered with Jean-François Bautte to register a company under a nine year contract that had been in effect since August 1, 1793. On October 1, 1804, they formed a new company, Moulinié, Bautte & Co., for a four year term, incorporating Jean-Gabriel Moynier into the partnership. This company specialises in manufacturing watch cases and is engaged in the watch and jewellery trade. From 1808 to 1821, following Moulinié’s retirement, the firm operated under the name Moulinié, Bautte & Moynier. Subsequently, the company continued as Moulinié Frères & Cie, with the involvement of the sons of Jean-François Moulinié and Jacques-Dauphin Moulinié Jr.
