A very fine and rare Swiss 18K yellow gold, enamel and pearl-set, open faced, key-winding, Directoire pocket watch with quarter-repeater on one bell, circa 1790.
Round-shaped, 18K gold, enamel and pearl-set case. Case back painted on enamel on gold by an unidentified Genevan workshop, showing a stripling playing piper to charm the damsel, the latter pointing out to him that he’s making false musical notes. Full plate, gilded brass movement with fusee and chain. Enamel dial with various types of decoration, Roman radial hours, outer minutes track with Arabic five minutes numerals, and Breguet-style hands. Dial and movement signed.

Geneva watchmaking workshop, which existed from 1775 to ca. 1784, it was a collaboration between Abraham Amalric and the brothers Pierre-Isaac Wiss and Jacob Wiss. The company was founded in 1760 as Les Frères Wiss after the death of Jacob Wiss in 1784; the company was renamed Wiss & Amalric until 1786. In 1787 Jean Nicolas Menu became a business partner in the company. Jean Nicolas was a watchmaker and watch dealer and married Jacob Wiss’s daughter. From then on, the company continued as Wiss Frères & Menu.
