Gold and cloisonné enamel cylinder watch

A very fine Swiss 18 carat gold, enamel and pearl set cylinder pocket watch made for the Chinese market, circa 1840.
Lavishly florally engraved fire gilt full plate movement, key wound, cylinder escapement, three armed steel balance, blued balance spring.
White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, centre seconds and gold spade hands. The case back with cloisonné enamel depicting a fine composition of summer flowers in a vase against a light-green ground, the bezels on both sides set with half pearls, florally hand engraved and polychrome enamelled band, the pendant also enamelled, half pearl set bow.

Cloisonné is an ancient technique for decorating metalwork objects with coloured material held in place or separated by metal strips or wire, normally of gold. In recent centuries, vitreous enamel has been used, but inlays of cut gemstones, glass and other materials were also used during older periods, indeed, cloisonné enamel very probably began as an easier imitation of cloisonné work using gems. The resulting objects can also be called cloisonné.
