Unsigned gold repeating automaton watch
–
A Swiss gold quarter repeating musical automaton watch that plays on the hour or on demand, circa 1840. The scene depicts St. George slaying the dragon. The watch features a gilded movement with separate barrels for time and music trains, an inverted cylinder escapement, and a plain three-arm balance. The musical movement includes 20 tuned teeth plucked by pins on both sides of a revolving disc, a large barrel, and a decoratively engraved cap. The music and automata can be activated by the hour or on demand. The dial has an eccentric cream enamel time dial with Arabic numerals, an outer pearled minute ring, and blued steel moon hands. Additionally, there is an automaton scene depicting St. George slaying the dragon, with his right arm raising and lowering his sword and the dragon at his feet. To the left, there is a niche with a blued steel background within which a nude lady with drapery appears.
–
The case is gold with milled bezels and band, a plain polished back, a slide to activate music at 2 o’clock, a gilt metal dust cap, and three apertures for winding trains and hand-setting.

Movement is running, repeating, and music is playing with the automata operational. The striking of the repeating work is currently out of sync with the hands and should be adjusted. The dial is enamel with slight chipping towards the centre; otherwise, it is in good condition. The automata dial has been re-gilded. The case is in refreshed condition, with the case back polished and the closure slightly loose. There are some tiny pinholes around the seam of the case back where it joins its bezel and some small imperfections on the band.
