Gold, enamel and diamond pendant watch

A very fine French 18 carat gold, diamond and enamel keyless winding pendant form watch designed as an Asian lady beetle, made by Charles Oudin in Paris, circa 1870.
The spring loaded wings with translucent red enamel over engine turning and painted with black enamel dots. The neck is set with diamonds. The head and the hinged belly are realistically chased and engraved, and the eyes are set with two paste stone cabochons. Small, white enamel dial with Roman numerals and blued steel hands. Movement 27 x 21 mm, heart shaped, gilded brass, going barrel, cylinder escapement, gilded brass monometallic balance and blued steel flat hairspring, polished steel index regulator.

Charles Oudin, a talented and innovative watch and clockmaker, was a student of Abraham-Louis Breguet. Oudin excelled in creating watches with the Equation of Time feature and developed a version of this complication that could be integrated into Breguet’s souscription watches. By 1805, he had established his workshop at the Palais Royal, Galerie de Pierre. In 1819, one of Oudin’s Equation of Time watches was showcased at the Paris Exhibition.
