These watches were made by the Geneva manufacturer Bautte & Moynier mainly for the Chinese and Oriental market. Some of these watches are mentioned in the literature, e.g. “La Montre Chinoise”, Alfred Chapuis, pages 228/229 and “La Montre des origines au 19ème siècle”, by Catherine Cardinal, page. 212. Three of these watches are described and illustrated in Antiquorum “The Sandberg Collection” 2001, pages 158 and 159. One of these watches is comparable to the present piece and was sold for a record price of 41,400 Swiss francs. Overall, according to our research, less than 10 of these watches were offered in auctions. They were all attributed to the manufacturer Bautte & Moynier à Genève and had 30000’s numbers.
