A Swiss heavy gold hunting cased pocket watch with pivoted detent escapement, circa 1850. Engine turned 18 Carat gold case with engraving: “L. Smith & Brother, Albany, N.Y.”,, and engraved and signed gold cuvette. Signed enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, auxiliary seconds and gold arrow shaped hands. Bridge movement, key wind, decorated, rhodium plated, with 21 jewels, pink gold train, pivoted detent escapement and gold screw compensation balance.

Henri Louis Matile was based in Le Locle , he was born on March 3, 1817 to Henri Louis Matile and Augustine Robert Grandpierre. Henri Louis married Laure Ducommun and from this marriage 3 children were born. His son Henri Louis Matile became Prefect of Boudry.

At the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876 Matile was represented with his precision clocks. In 1877, 1880 and 1882 he received awards at trade fairs in Neuchatel . Representatives for Matile in the US included Mathey Brothers, Mathez & Co, Star & Marcuse in New York, and I. Smith & Brother, Albany NY.
