Gold and emeralds repeating watch
–
A remarkable Geneva quarter repeating pocket watch studded with cut emeralds made for the turkish market, circa 1840.
The surface of this charming pocket watch has been decorated with applied gold wire tendrils, chased red gold acanthus leaves and beautiful emeralds on sable ground. A chased garland of three-colour gold leaves and flowers surrounds the exquisite dial. The quarter repeater is activated by pulling the crown, giving it a quarter-turn and then pressing the pendant.
The case is 18 carat gold with emeralds, the dial is two-tone gilt and engine-turned centre. This watch has a bridge movement, 2 hammers / 2 gongs, a going barrel, a cylinder escapement, a ring balance and keywind.

The name “Moulinie” traces back to a company Moulinier & Bautte that produced pocket watch cases in Geneva during the last decade of the 18th century (1793-1802). From 1804 on the company – who now traded as “Moulinier, Bautte und Cie” – produced watches and was known for its high quality timekeepers from 1808 until 1821. The partners separated in 1826; Bautte founded “Bautte & Moynier” and Moulinier conducted his business as “Moulinier Aine & Cie.”, which changed into “Moulinier Frères & Cie” after 1840.
